Summary:On the basis of documentary findings and secondary sources, the present article conducts a comparative historical analysis of the participation of the state and other market agents. It presents their impacts on beef production, marketing, and consumption in Argentina in 1976-2015 and in Brazil in 1964-2014, in other words, the dynamics of agribusiness in both countries. The results show that, in both cases, the state was the principal player responsible for the diverging economic developments in these markets.
