Solid Waste Management in the Kathmandu Valley: Challenges, Initiatives and Perspectives

Kathmandu is one of the world’s most polluted cities. Urban solid waste has worsen as a result of unplanned urbanization and population growth. Due to this factors the government is unable to keep up with the rising demand for solid waste management, which has left the garbage and sanitation situation in a chaotic state. Trash is frequently seen thrown next to roads or deposited along river banks. The Municipality is under a lot of pressure to manage this issue but even though various plans and alternatives have been devised, they were unable to solve the waste problem on their own. The aim of this thesis is to underline the importance of the informal sector in waste management: waste pickers, scrap collectors, traders and recyclers play a significant role in managing solid waste of cities like Kathmandu by collecting, sorting and trading. By investigating the importance of their role, this research aims to explore the possibility and the advantages of integrating the informal waste workers in solid waste management by implementing a community-based solid waste management project.
