Summary:The article tackles the emerging experiences of modern associationalism in the city of Salta in Argentina in the first half of the twentieth century, for the purpose of examining the ties between provincial governments and the local church, after the collapse of the colonial order. To this end, it also examines the structure of nineteenth-century charities and the gradual rise of the modern public sector. In particular, it describes the associations that were established on the margins of church jurisdiction and summarizes some of the manifestations of secularization in the above-mentioned period.
