Oxigenación por Membrana Extracorpórea (ECMO) en Enfermedad por Coronavirus (Covid-19).

The SARS-Cov-2 pandemic is still a global health threat with significant economic impact and social disruption. There is an alternative in the management of patients with COVID-19 and severe ARDS which is extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) venovenous (VV) modality; which is an invasive technique that oxygenates the blood and eliminates CO2 while the defective lung rests and is given recovery time. It is a support performed in a specialized care center, experienced in the treatment of refractory respiratory failure and severe ARDS. Data on its effectiveness are limited and come mainly from case reports or single-center experiences. This work aims to review the literature with non-experimental and descriptive research design on the use of ECMO in patients with COVID-19 older than 18 years, which were reported in scientific journals from January 2020 to December 2022 by searching PubMed, Cochrane, and Web of Science databases. A total of 307 scientific articles were collected, of which 60 were selected for meeting the eligibility criteria. It is concluded from the literature findings that patients who received ECMO for ARDS due to COVID-19 appear to have worse outcomes than those with non-COVID-19 ARDS. However, ECMO has an important role in temporary support of patients with severe acute respiratory failure, both as a bridge to recovery in selected cases and as a bridge to transplantation.
