Está ubicada en la parroquia Gonzáles Suárez en el Cantón Otavalo, en el límite entre las provincias de Imbabura y Pichincha. Su población está mayormente compuesta por los pueblos ancestrales Otavalos y Kayambi, aunque también incluye un pequeño porcentaje de personas de origen blanco, negra y montubia. Esta diversidad se debe en parte a la presencia de la antigua línea férrea que unía las ciudades de Quito con Otavalo, y cuyos trabajadores se establecieron en estas tierras tras su construcción. San Agustín de Cajas se inserta en el páramo andino, ecosistema que desempeña un papel crucial en la vida de las comunidades rurales, ya que proporcionan el agua necesaria para el consumo. Los propios habitantes de San Agustín de Cajas han desarrollado sistemas de captación, almacenamiento y distribución de agua para el consumo propio. Tambien, la comunidad ha destinado una parte de su territorio para el estudio cuidado y protección del paisaje natural y rural, característico del páramo. En la comunidad se mantiene varias edificaciones construidas con materiales y técnicas locales, estas viviendas se integran armónicamente con el entorno respetando y complementando el paisaje. En este contexto, el proyecto de fin de carrera busca no solo despertar la conciencia en la población, así como fomentar la investigación sobre la importancia de los páramos para estas comunidades. Así mismo, aborda una necesidad práctica solicitada por la comunidad: la construcción de una nueva piscina para almacenar las aguas remanecientes de los tanques de agua de consumo, que carecen de un tratamiento paisajístico adecuado y causan impacto en el paisaje natural. En este sentido el proyecto aspira promover la inserción de la comunidad con el agua para resaltar la importancia cultural y ambiental del recurso hídrico y promover el cuidado e investigación del páramo andino.The rural community of San Agustin de Cajas arose during the process of dissolution of the haciendas, San Agustin de Cajas, La Vega, Apangora, and La Cruz de Cajas, owned by the Catholic Church in the mid-twentieth century. It is located in the Gonzáles Suárez parish in the Otavalo canton, on the border between the provinces of Imbabura and Pichincha. The ancestral Otavalo and Kayambi peoples make up the majority of its population, with a small percentage of people of white, black, and Montubia origin. This diversity is due in part to the presence of the old railroad line that linked the cities of Quito and Otavalo and whose workers settled in these lands after its construction. San Agustín de Cajas is located in the Andean moor, an ecosystem that plays a crucial role in the lives of rural communities because it provides the water necessary for consumption. The inhabitants of San Agustín de Cajas themselves have developed systems for collecting, storing, and distributing water for their own consumption. The community has also set aside part of its territory for the study, care, and protection of the natural and rural landscape, characteristic of the moor. The community upholds several buildings built using local materials and techniques, harmoniously integrating them with the environment to respect and complement the landscape. In this context, the final project seeks not only to raise awareness in the population but also to promote research on the importance of the moors for these communities. The community has also requested the construction of a new pool to store the leftover water from the drinking water tanks, which lack proper landscape treatment and negatively impact the natural landscape.
