Despite the importance of cacao, it is significant to mention that in the past six decades the national industry has been seriously affected by the impact of diseases, especially the fungal diseases. Among these diseases are include the Moniliasis of cacao caused byMoniliophthora roreri; and Witches' Broom Diseasecaused by Crinipellis pernicious. Both pathogens caused dramatically damaged in crop production, due to their destructive action mainly located in the fruits (pods) of all ages throughout the crop cycle. It is well documented that both diseases can be located in the producing regions, as well as in the coast region and the Amazon region of Ecuador, which are causing production and economic losses of up to 100%. For this reason, different national and international centers of research are working on finding efficient methods for controlling the Monilia of cacao. These methods are involve using standard techniques as phytosanitary pruning, implement prevention and conventional uses of chemicals, and use of resistant or tolerant clones. However, these methods are generally not enough to control the problem and production losses… |
