| Özet: | Stevia rebaudiana is a plant that contains in its leaves 0.3 percent Dulcoside, 0.6 percent Rebaudioside C, 3.8 percent Rebaudioside A and 9.1 percent Stevioside, it has been described that the extract of the Stevia Rebaudiana plant has an effect antimicrobial due to a compound called stevioside which inhibits glucan, therefore, although the plant is a sweetener, is not fermented in acids by bacteria and this compound influences the enzymes that are responsible for the decomposition of sugars. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of Stevia rebaudiana plant extract on Staphylococcus aureus. The sample was taken from the oral flora of canines between five and seven years old that presented moderate to severe tartar. Subsequently, by means of the steam water distillation method, the extract of the plant was obtained. The bacterium was confronted with two synthetic antibiotics, such as amoxicillin and tetracycline and at 4 concentrations of the plant extract (25 percent, 50 percent, 75 percent and the stock solution). The results were analyzed with the nonparametric test Kruskal Wallis, 0. Finding that the extract of the plant does have an antimicrobial effect in 75 percent concentrations and the mother solution. The inhibition halo obtained with amoxicillin was 20.4 mm, tetracycline was 33 mm, 1.47 mm with the extract 75 percent and 9.3 mm with the stock solution. Proving that the extract of Stevia rebaudiana does have an antimicrobial effect. However, it should be used as a preventive method, but not to treat bacterial infections. |
