Özet:Streptococcus mutans is considered the most important microorganism involved in dental caries, because of its ability to generate a biofilm on dental surfaces and to synthesize extracellular insoluble glucans. The acid produced by the fermentation of sugar can destroy the tooth enamel and lead to tooth decay. Some studies suggest that chewing gum with xylitol may decrease the presence of S. mutants in saliva, so it also helps reduce the risk of tooth decay. The consumption of highsugar gum is undoubtedly one of the factors that cause dental caries in children, since they have free access to this kind of candy at the entrance of schools. Taking into account that children spend most of the day in schools, often with a high sugar diet and do not brush their teeth, it is necessary to find an alternative to reduce the risk of caries they are exposed. The present study has as aim to verify if xylitol gums can actually reduce the presence of Streptococcus. mutans present in the oral cavity. For this, samples of the dental biofilm were taken from 32 children from the Academia Almirante Nelson Educational Unit, divided into 2 groups, Group A was given sugar gum and Group X was given gum with xylitol. The samples were taken before and after consuming the chewing gum and taken to bacteriological laboratory for subsequent incubation. The results showed that xylitol chewing gums reduced the presence of Streptococcus mutans in the oral cavity by 81.25 percent. Therefore, it is concluded that xylitol chewing gum is a good alternative as a method for the prevention of dental caries, it is freely accessible and does not require supervision.
