Summary: | The United Nations was established in 1945 aimed at maintaining international peace and security, helping the nations worldwide to end their conflicts under peaceful ways. Since then the organization has mediated or, in some cases has intervened in several cases of international conflicts in many of which its participation has been successful while in others strongly criticized. The present essay focuses mainly on the permanent members of the UN Security Council (United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia and China); their influence on decisions taken by the UN Security Council on the cases of the genocide in Rwanda in 1994 and the civil war in Libya in 2011; framed by the realistic theory and focused on geopolitical, cultural and economic approaches that enables to understand the reasons for their decisions and / or omissions. |
