| Samenvatting: | This work was based on the evaluation of salivary pH changes in children, before and after consumption of xylitol and sucrose chewing gum. The initial pH was compared before consuming chewing gum with xylitol or sucrose and after consumption of it and how it could affect the pH and oral health of children. OBJECTIVE: The main objective is to compare the effect of chewing gum with sucrose or xylitol on salivary pH change in patients 5 to 12 years old who attend the dental clinic of the University of Las Américas. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in which a sample of 50 children were measured and the salivary pH was measured before giving them chewing gum, 25 of which were given chewing gum with xylitol and 25 with sucrose in a random manner. Chewing the gum and then measuring the salivary pH with the pH test strips. RESULTS: As a main result in the present study we have that if there is a change in the salivary pH of children 5 to 12 years old who attend the dental consultation at the UDLA Dental Care Center when consuming sucrose chewing gum while with Gum with xylitol remains at a neutral pH. CONCLUSION: It was shown that the consumption of chewing gum with xylitol does not affect the oral pH; it maintains a neutral pH which means that it is advisable to consume these chewing gums; while the consumption of chewing gum with sucrose significantly decreases the salivary pH so it creates an oral environment prone to the formation of dental caries. |
