Beskrivelse
Summary:Currently, there is a high incidence of oral diseases, the most common is dental caries, and periodontal disease, it is vitally important to ensure efficient oral hygiene in children, through effective tooth brushing, diet, and different habits such as going to the dentist, specialist in oral health, which will provide preventive and restorative procedures, avoiding the spread of pathologies in the mouth. Children with intellectual and motor disabilities, due to their physical and mental alterations, prevent them from brushing their teeth, besides consuming cariogenic diets, and the high consumption of drugs due to their systemic diseases, the low frequency of visits to the dentist; increases the incidences of oral pathologies. The present research will focus on promoting good oral health through education on dental caries and its prevention and reducing the rate of dental caries and other pathologies in children with special disabilities. This study was carried out with the collaboration of 49 people between mother and - or father of family, teachers and physiotherapists, in the Fudrine Foundation, in the city of Quito, and in the Specialized Education Unit Puyo, in the city of Puyo, which answered a survey to measure basic knowledge in the dental field in children with motor and intellectual disabilities. The results indicated the lack of knowledge in oral health, in oral prevention such as poor brushing technique, diet, and lack of professionals to care for this group of vulnerable special children, therefore high incidence of caries due to the deposit of bacterial plaque on dental surfaces. Dental caries is a disease in which many factors predominate for its appearance and spread, and insufficient knowledge of the people who take care of these special children makes the spread of this disease even more. It is necessary to carry out more preventive education about this oral disease, common in all children not only in dental appointments but also in education centers and in the family area that is directly related to the care of children with disabilities since most of them have only empirical knowledge about caries.
