| Summary: | The present research seeks to determine if charismatic leaders influence during the construction of international organizations, and if this influence becomes the reflection of the most important aspects of a leader personality over the institution. The international relations theory that guides this study is constructivism, since, in it, the leaders play a very important role in the construction of intersubjective structures and concepts in specific topics, such as Latin American cooperation. The empirical case analyzed to determine this influence is Hugo Chavez and the creation of the Union of South Amrican Nations. The methodology of analysis used to fulfill these objectives is composed of three steps. During the first step, characteristics of Chavez are examined to determine if they are consistent with those of a charismatic leader, through the application of a three-dimensional definition: social, relational, and psychological. The second step refers to the description and analysis of the structure of UNASUR, in the light of its constitutive treaty. And during the third step, the most important components of both leader and institution are contrasted to determine if there are similar features sufficient to establish a meaningful correlation. The results reached is that Hugo Chávez is a charismatic leader. However, his influence on the construction of UNASUR was not sufficient to determine that it reflects characteristics of its personality. |
