| Gaia: | This study aims to determine the existence of a temporal positive relationship between oil revenues and current expenditure in Ecuador, during the period 1972-2014. In order to analyze this relationship, the current paper used an Ordinary Least Square econometric model, in which to observe the interaction between these two variables. The results obtained in this model show a positive relationship between oil revenues and current expenditure, following a procyclical behavior in the government is fiscal accounts. Such behavior causes an excessive increase of expenses in times of oil boom. However, in periods of low oil prices, current expenditure remains at the same boom levels. This causes economic problems such as unsustainable debt and budget deficits. |
