Description
Résumé:The research project entitled “Analysis of the Chibunga River overflow threat and its effects on the San Luis parish of Riobamba canton in the period September - December 2024” focuses on the development of a hydraulic model to determine the effects generated by the overflow of the Chibunga River. This river, which flows through the rural parish of San Luis, has historically experienced overflows that have caused significant damage to infrastructure and the local economy. The main objective of the research focused on identifying the damage to essential elements such as the drinking water system, sewerage and electrical network, as a result of the overflowing of the river. To achieve this, a mixed methodology was implemented, combining qualitative and quantitative approaches, under a non-experimental field, descriptive and analytical design. Precipitation data were collected through the POWER NASA platform, and Excel software was used to process and calculate the maximum rainfall in 24 hours applying the Gumbel method and the Intensity-Frequency-Duration (IFD) curve. In addition, the Iber program was used to simulate the areas exposed to flooding for different return periods. The results obtained showed significant impacts for the return periods analyzed for 10, 50, 100 and 500 years, highlighting an event that occurred in 2023. Based on the results, measures are proposed to reduce the risk of overflowing of the Chibunga River. These proposals seek to mitigate the impact of flooding in the parish and protect both the infrastructure and economic resources of the San Luis parish.
