Evaluación de la inmunoesterilización como alternativa ante la orquiectomía tradicional en ovinos.

In the Bolívar province, San Miguel canton, Santiago parish, at 2800 meters above sea level, a study was conducted comparing two sheep castration methods. The general objective was to evaluate whether immunosterilization is an alternative to orchiectomy. The specific objectives were: 1) To establish the result of the anti-GnRH biological on testicular morphometry (testicular diameter) and seminal quality (sperm viability). 2) To determine the effect of immunosterilization by evaluating different hormonal parameters (LH, FSH, and Testosterone). 3) To analyze the cost-benefit relationship between the traditional technique and immunosterilization. The experimental variables involved 12 male sheep.According to the data obtained and analyzed, both treatments showed weight decreases after the first doses, although the T2 group (immunosterilization) presented significantly lower values throughout the experiment. Regarding body condition, both started with a score of 3/5, but T1 (orchiectomy) recovered this condition by the end, while T2 remained at 2/5. Body temperatures were higher initially in T2 but then stabilized, with no significant differences at the end. Regarding mood, both groups showed initial decline, though T1 showed faster recovery, exhibiting signs of alertness and normal appetite from the second dose. In T2, recovery was slower, although by the end, all animals in both groups showed improvement. Testicular diameter in T2 progressively decreased from 25.10 cm to 17.33 cm, demonstrating the effect of the immunosterilant. Furthermore, a sustained reduction in hormonal levels (FSH, LH, and testosterone) was recorded in T2, confirming the inhibition of testicular function. Sperm viability was high in the first sample of T2, but comparative studies warn of later impairments. Finally, the economic analysis showed that orchiectomy was more profitable than immunosterilization, due to the lower cost of inputs and analyses.
