Shrnutí:This research addresses the symbolism of the cocada esmeraldeña as an ethnocommunicational expression of the Afro-Ecuadorian community during the period from January to July 2025. Using a mixed-methods approach that included surveys, interviews, observations, and bibliographic review, it was found that cocada goes beyond being a traditional food, becoming an emblem of collective memory, cultural resistance, and Afro-descendant identity. The results show that more than 90% of respondents perceive gastronomy as an effective tool to narrate the history of communities, highlighting cocada as a cultural symbol present in festivities, fairs, and community spaces. Furthermore, it was concluded that its preparation preserves ancestral practices transmitted mainly by Afro-descendant women, which reinforces its ethnocommunicational importance. Finally, the study proposes the creation of a testimonial audiovisual product that contributes to the dissemination, preservation, and recognition of this cultural heritage in Esmeraldas and throughout Ecuador.
