Riassunto:Parental authority is a legal concept that grants parents authority and responsibility over their minor children. This power entails various aspects, such as education, health, well-being and legal representation of the child. Parents have the duty to care for, protect and ensure the well-being of their children, as well as to make decisions that benefit their comprehensive development. On the other hand, the protection of the best interests of the child is a fundamental principle in International Law and national laws, which establishes that all actions and decisions related to children must have as their primary objective: their well-being and optimal development. This principle implies guaranteeing the child's right to survival, health, education, protection against violence and abuse, as well as the right to express his or her opinion on matters that concern him or her, in accordance with his or her age and maturity. In short, parental authority gives parents authority over their children, but this authority must always be exercised in the best interests of the child. This implies that parents' decisions and actions must be aimed at guaranteeing the physical, emotional, social and educational well-being of their children, always prioritizing their needs and rights. The exercise of parental authority is a legal figure that dates back to Roman Law, where the paterfamilias had absolute control over his family. However, currently, this is only an object of study, since the regulatory evolution of contemporary society has transformed the way of understanding the obligations and rights in favor of children and adolescents. In the development of this research, it is evident, through the conceptual, doctrinal, legal and field review, that the exercise of parental authority by family members must always be linked to the comprehensive protection of the minor.
