| الملخص: | The objective of this research was to determine the levels of sustainability in cocoa farms in Caluma. The sample consisted of 40 Agricultural Production Units (UPA's), and a survey with open and closed questions was applied. The aspects analyzed included sociodemographic, environmental, agroecosystem, technology and infrastructure factors. A General Sustainability Index (GSI) was created and a SWOT analysis was applied based on the information provided by the farmers. The results indicated that the main obstacles for producers are the low market price of cocoa and the lack of bank credit. Regarding environmental problems, although some mentioned limitations in soil productivity, 73% stated that they had no problems. There was a high diversity of crops on the farms, especially the combination of cocoa with fruit trees and timber species. However, cocoa production is variable: 50% of the farms have acceptable levels, while the other half have deficiencies. With respect to infrastructure, no serious problems affecting production were detected, although no farm reached optimal levels of sustainability. Only a small percentage of the farms could improve significantly with structural changes |
