description The present investigation has as objective; To determine the antimicrobial effectiveness of the essential oil of oregano against strains of Escherichia coli isolated from bovine mastitis, in the general laboratory of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the State University of Bolivar, through the analysis of samples from the farm “La Felicidad” located in the Upan parish, belonging to the province of Chimborazo, methodologically for the development of this research began with the extraction of the essential oil of oregano by steam distillation, The yield and chemical characteristics were evaluated through the quantification of volatile compounds by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS), in addition, the determination of its antimicrobial activity at concentrations of 20%, 40%, 60% and Enrofloxacin 5μg as a positive control against 20 strains of Escherichia coli, identifying the minimum concentration required to inhibit their growth with findings of inhibition halos with averages greater than 8 mm. As part of the results found, it was observed that the oil yield was 0.84%, highlighting that within the composition formic acid and p-Cymene were identified in 66.63% and 11.54% respectively, observing that the treatments expressed a highly significant effect p<0.05, where T3 (60%) expressed the highest average in the diameter of the inhibition halo with 62. 40 mm, establishing that the minimum inhibitory concentration was 3% since it showed an average of 9 mm of inhibition halo, concluding based on this background that oregano essential oil has antimicrobial effectiveness against strains of Escherichia coli causing bovine mastitis in in-vitro assays using the Kirby-Bauer technique.

Como parte de los resultados encontrados se observo que el rendimiento del aceite fue de 0.84%, destacando que dentro de la composición se identificó al ácido fórmico y p-Cymene en un 66.63% y 11.54% respectivamente, observando que los tratamientos expresaron un efecto altamente significativo p<0.05, donde el T3 (60%) expresó el mayor promedio en el diámetro del halo de inhibición con 62.40 mm, estableciendo que la concentración mínima inhibitoria fue de 3% ya que esta ostentó un promedio de 9 mm de halo de inhibición, concluyendo en base a estos antecedentes que el aceite esencial de orégano posee efectividad antimicrobiana frente a cepas de Escherichia coli causante de mastitis bovina en ensayos in-vitro mediante la técnica de Kirby-Bauer.Guaranda.
