description In the present investigation, the following objectives were set: assess pain in cats using the Melbourne and Grimace scales, and determine the best postoperative analgesia treatment in cats. The sample size was 60 patients, the analgesic protocols were Maropitant Citrate and Bupivacaine. The field work was carried out at the SINAI Specialty Veterinary Hospital located in Quito. For the development of this research, we began by dividing the 60 patients into two random groups to determine the corresponding protocol: Group A infusion of Maropitant Citrate, this medication was applied in 2 times: a loading dose in the premedication and by infusion during surgery and Group B intraperitoneal application of Bupivacaine, this medication was administered intraperitoneally in the form of a stream once the uterus and ovaries had been removed and before muscle suturing was performed. Once the patients woke up from anesthesia, pain assessments began. With Grimace, the position of the ears, position of the eyes, tension of the muzzle, position of the whiskers, and position of the head were evaluated. These parameters were evaluated. They rate from 0 to 2, with 2 being the highest score representing a high level of pain and 0 being the lowest (no pain). A score equal to or greater than 4 will require analgesic rescue; With Melbourne, physiological variables were evaluated: pupil size, increase in heart rate, respiratory rate, presence of salivation and behavioral variables such as response to palpation, motor activity, mental status, posture and vocalization, these parameters are rated from 0 to 3. 0 being absent pain and 3 unbearable pain, requiring analgesic rescue when the score is 12 or higher. The assessments were carried out 4 times, the first when the patients were fully awake from anesthesia and subsequently 3 more times with an interval of 2 hours between measurements. As part of the results, it was observed that the two analgesic protocols acted in the same way when reducing the painful stimulus, obtaining non-significant statistical results p= >0.05.
