Description
Summary:The objective of this research is to evaluate the structural vulnerability of urban bridges in the city of Tena to the overflowing of the Pano and Tena rivers. The methodology used to evaluate the structural vulnerability of the bridges is based on the elaboration of visual inspection reports, complemented with the “Costa Rica” guide for determining the condition of bridges, non-destructive in situ tests were implemented to verify the quality and resistance of the concrete. Through this activity, it was possible to obtain the qualification of the condition and the vulnerability level of the bridges, which will allow proposals and recommendations for improvement, guaranteeing the functionality of these structures. Based on the results obtained, four bridges were identified in the urban area, three of which were more susceptible to damage. Based on the visual inspection and the qualification of their conditions, the following was determined: the cable-stayed bridge showed a deficient condition; the Arco bridge presented a regular condition and both bridges presented a medium level of vulnerability; and the Warren type truss bridge evidenced an alarming condition and a high level of vulnerability. In view of these findings, we proceeded to develop a proposal for mitigation measures aimed at mitigating the identified risks and formulate recommendations to improve the structural components and problems found in the bridges, such as undermining and structural weakening, in order to ensure the safety of the bridges in the face of adverse natural events. In addition, these mitigation measures will strengthen the infrastructure against future river flooding.
