Objetivo: Determinar nivel de conocimiento de los padres sobre higiene bucal y caries dental en niños que asisten a la clínica de odontopediatría de la facultad de odontología. Método: Se utilizó un enfoque de tipo descriptivo, transversal, en la búsqueda de evidencia científica, cualitativa, cuantitativa, exploratoria, documental, los datos estadísticos pertinentes para los resultados de la investigación. Resultados: el 50% inicio cepillado después de erupción de varios dientes, 58% efectúa el cepillado 2 veces al día, el 38% utiliza el tamaño de pasta de una lenteja, el 64% de los padres compran la pasta dental por sabor más no por la edad indicada, el 65% desconoce la concentración de flúor que posee la pasta dental, el 73% carece de información sobre beneficios y efectos del flúor y por último el 85% concuerda que la visita al odontólogo debe realizarse antes de los 2 años de edad. Conclusiones: Se detectó falta de información y conocimiento de los padres sobre la importancia de aplicar hábitos de higiene bucal en edad temprana.The oral health of children can be negatively affected by lack of parental knowledge about oral hygiene and brushing techniques; self-care and proper hygiene practices can significantly reduce the development and progression of caries. Objective: To determine the level of knowledge of parents about oral hygiene and dental caries in children attending the pediatric dentistry clinic of the dental school. Method: A descriptive, cross-sectional approach was used in the search for scientific, qualitative, quantitative, exploratory, documentary and statistical data pertinent to the results of the investigation. Results: 50% start brushing after the eruption of several teeth, 58% brush twice a day, 38% use the size of a lentil, 64% of parents buy toothpaste for flavor but not for the indicated age, 65% do not know the concentration of fluoride that toothpaste has, 73% lack information on the benefits and effects of fluoride and finally 85% agree that a visit to the dentist should be made before the age of 2 years. Conclusions: Lack of information and knowledge of parents about the importance of applying oral hygiene habits at an early age was detected.Universidad de Guayaquil.
