El término se lo usa clínicamente para describir dimensiones coronales de los tejidos supracrestales adjuntos. Para definir al espacio biológico, se debe comprender la existencia del espacio biológico histológico y morfológico; y el espacio biológico clínico, esto según las estructuras que lo constituyen. Por este motivo, en el desarrollo de este trabajo se tiene como objetivo, analizar la importancia de la preservación y manejo del espacio biológico. Para alcanzar este propósito la metodología utilizada tiene diseño de investigación cualitativa, de tipo documental o bibliográfica, exploratoria, descriptiva, no experimental y transversal, empleando los métodos inductivo-deductivo y analítico-sintético, mediante el uso de la técnica de revisión bibliográfica, para la recopilación, análisis, comprensión y síntesis de la información en torno a la temática desarrollada. De acuerdo a esto los resultados arrojan que el espacio biológico es esencial para la preservación de la salud periodontal, por lo que los tratamientos odontológicos deben estar dirigidos a respetar dicho espacio, para mantener el periodonto en estado óptimo. Así, como conclusiones se establece que existe una estrecha relación entre la periodoncia y los procedimientos clínicos de las demás áreas odontológicas, y el manejo no idóneo del periodonto puede causar una invasión del espacio biológico, desencadenando diversas alteraciones.The biological width is a functional biological barrier, which helps to preserve periodontal health, acting as the natural seal of dental and periodontal structures, protecting them from infections and diseases. The term is used clinically to describe coronal dimensions of the attached supracrestal tissues. To define the biological width, the existence of the histological and morphological biological width must be understood; and the clinical biological width, this according to the structures that constitute it. For this reason, in the development of this work, the objective is to analyze the importance of the preservation and management of biological width. To achieve this purpose, the methodology used has a qualitative research design, documentary or bibliographic, exploratory, descriptive, non-experimental and cross-sectional, using inductive deductive and analytical-synthetic methods, through the use of the bibliographic review technique, to the compilation, analysis, comprehension and synthesis of the information around the theme developed. According to this, the results show that the biological width is essential for the preservation of periodontal health, so dental treatments must be aimed at respecting said width, to maintain the periodontium in an optimal state. In conclusion, it is established that there is a close relationship between periodontics and the clinical procedures of other dental areas, and the unsuitable handling of the periodontium can cause an invasion of the biological width, triggering various alterations.Universidad de Guayaquil.
