No tiene preferencia en edad o género, y se ha convertido en uno de los hábitos parafuncionales orales más comunes en nuestra sociedad. Generalmente en la consulta odontológica recibimos pacientes con dientes astillados, desgastes, fracturas o alteraciones en su mordida y muchas veces no analizamos lo que lo causa y directamente pasamos a tratarlo, no se da importancia al hábito y los tratamientos fracasan. El objetivo del presente trabajo es analizar los efectos que produce la onicofagia en el sector anterior, para poder diagnosticar el hábito, las causas y realizar un tratamiento adecuado. Se realizó una minuciosa revisión en la literatura científica, obteniendo información pertinente de 112 fuentes bibliográficas desde el año 2000, en la cual se observó el importante papel que cumple el odontólogo ya que puede detectar este hábito al realizar un diagnóstico físico y oral del paciente, éste generalmente no tiene conocimiento de lo que se puede producir a futuro si el hábito continúa por ende el odontólogo debe guiar al paciente a una consulta con un psicólogo para la confirmación del diagnóstico que provoca el problema y realizar el tratamiento pertinente. Se llegó a la conclusión de que este es un hábito grave que puede desencadenar una serie de efectos a nivel oral que no solo afectan la estética de los dientes del paciente, sino también su función y puede provocar infecciones muy severas. La literatura respalda que, el paciente debe ser tratado en conjunto con un psicólogo para erradicar totalmente este hábito, para que así no exista fracaso en el tratamiento odontológico.Onychophagy is the obsessive compulsive habit of eating or biting fingernails. This parafunctional habit has no preference in age or gender, and it has become one of the most common ones in society. Generally, at the dental office, patients present splintered teeth, tooth wear, fractures or alterations in their bite oftentimes causes are not analyzed to proceed with treatments. No habit is given importance and thus dental treatments fail. The objective of this investigation is to analyze the effects produced by Onychophagy in the previous sector so as to diagnose the habits, the causes to proceed with adequate treatments. The role played by dentists is very important since they can detect this habit when making a physical and oral diagnosis of the patient. Usually, dental professionals lack knowledge of how to treat the aforementioned behavior; therefore, they must guide patients to a consultation with a psychologist. Several authors show that it is a serious habit that can trigger a series of effects at the oral level that not only affect the aesthetics of the patients’ teeth, but also their function. The literature supports that, the patient must be treated together with a psychologist to completely eradicate this habit, so that there is no failure in the dental treatment.Universidad de Guayaquil.
