El objetivo de la presente revisión bibliográfica es analizar el efecto de la agenesia en la dentición permanente.La metodología empleada en la presente investigación es detipo documental, descriptiva, analítica y retrospectiva en su búsqueda, de método deductivo; a partir de las palabras clave “agenesia, oligodoncia, hipodoncia”, se utilizaron 120 artículos científicos que van desde el 2016 al 2021, y que fueron obtenidos en la web gracias a los buscadores Google Académico, Scielo, Redalyc, y en los metabuscadores PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, de los cuales, en base a criterios de inclusión y exclusión se analizaron 97artículos.Se obtuvo como resultado que la incidencia de la agenesia durante la dentición permanente es más baja en relación a la dentición temporal; sin embargo, dependiendo de la pieza ausente puede generar maloclusiones de clase II y clase III. Se recomienda incrementar el tamaño de la muestra a través de hospitales del Ministerio de Salud Pública, el IEES, entre otras instituciones, con el objetivo de obtener una prevalencia e incidencia real de la agenesia dental.Dental agenesis is a pathology characterized by the absence of one or more teeth, due to some alteration in the dental lamina that will prevent the formation of the dental germ,generating both aesthetic and functional problems in both the deciduousand permanent dentition.The aim ofthe present bibliographic review is to analyze the effect of agenesis in the permanent dentition.The methodology used in this research is documentary, descriptive, analytical and retrospective in its search, deductive method;from the keywords "agenesis, oligodontia, hypodontia", 120 scientific articles ranging from 2016 to 2021 were used,which were obtained on the web thanks to the search engines Google Scholar, Scielo, RedALyC, and in the meta-search engines PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, of which, based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, 97 articles were analyzed.It was obtained as a result that the incidence of agenesis during the permanent dentition is lower in relation to the primary dentition; however, depending on the missing tooth, it can generate class II and class III malocclusions.It is recommended to increase the size of the sample through hospitals of theMinisterio de Salud Públicadel Ecuador, IEES, among other institutions, with the objective of obtaining a real prevalence and incidence of dental agenesis.Universidad de Guayaquil.
