La "retención dentaria" puede presentarse en dos formas: el diente está completamente rodeado por tejido óseo (retención interósea) o el diente está cubierto por la mucosa gingival (retención subgingival). Cualquiera de los dientes temporarios, permanentes o supernumerarios, pueden quedar retenidos en los maxilares. La retención de los temporarios es un hecho excepcional. La denominada inclusión secundaria puede ser posible por una acción mecánica de los dientes vecinos, que vuelven a introducir al diente temporario dentro del hueso de donde provenía.
