Los protectores bucales son dispositivo resistente que va colocado intra oralmente para prevenir o reducir las lesiones bucales, estos son utilizados para deportes en especial deportes de contacto. Como objetivo general de esta investigación será analizar la importancia de los protectores bucales en la prevalencia de las lesiones en niños deportistas. Su metodología fue de realizar recopilación de información, se analizaron artículos, revistas científicas y libros electrónicos con una revisión del 70% de la literatura de los últimos 5 años. Los tipos de investigación bibliográfica, exploratorios, transversales, retrospectivos y exploratorios. El resultado obtenido se pudo determinar la importancia de la odontología deportiva, uso y funciones del protector bucal, además de sus características de los protectores bucales para deportistas. Como conclusión la importancia de los protectores bucales en la prevalencia de las lesiones en deportistas es de mucho interés ya que tienen eficacia en la prevención de traumatismos bucales al deportista y a la vez da seguridad en su rendimiento deportivo, además se determinó los tipos de protectores bucales existentes, considerando dentro de sus características el protector a medida como el ideal en la práctica deportiva.Physical activity is one of the most important factors in the growth of children, oral injuries that occur in childhood are mostly due to physical activity or sports, these can interfere in the development of their primary dentition thus affecting the permanent teeth when they are still in the period of tooth replacement. Mouthguards are a resistant device that is placed intraorally to prevent or reduce oral injuries, these are used for sports, especially contact sports. The general objective of this research is to analyze the importance of mouthguards in the prevalence of injuries in athletes. Its methodology was to collect information, articles, scientific journals and electronic books were analyzed with a review of 70% of the literature of the last 5 years. The types of bibliographic research were exploratory, transversal, retrospective and exploratory. The results obtained were able to determine the importance of sports dentistry, the use and functions of mouthguards, as well as the characteristics of mouthguards for athletes. In conclusion, the importance of mouthguards in the prevalence of injuries in athletes is of great interest since they are effective in the prevention of oral trauma to the athlete and at the same time gives security in their sports performance, in addition, the types of existing mouthguards were determined, considering within their characteristics the custom-made mouthguard as the ideal one in sports practice.Universidad de Guayaquil.
