Existe evidencia de que los microorganismos bacterianos y sus toxinas se pueden desplazar, desde un sitio específico como el periodonto en la cavidad bucal al torrente sanguíneo, logrando traspasar la barrera placentaria durante el embarazo y desencadenar en la unidad feto-placenta una serie de procesos que inducirán a la dilatación y contracción anticipada del útero, obteniendo como resultado nacimientos pretérmino y/o bajo peso al nacer. El objetivo de este trabajo fue presentar las complicaciones neonatales relacionadas con la enfermedad periodontal, analizando la asociación de las afectaciones periodontales con la posible interrupción del desarrollo normal de la gestación. El tipo de investigación fue bibliográfica, fundamentándose principalmente en la literatura y estudios realizados en los últimos cinco años. Los resultados indicaron que las hormonas sexuales femeninas al tener como órgano blanco las estructuras periodontales, llevan a que se agraven los signos clínicos de una enfermedad periodontal existente. El embarazo no es factor causal de la enfermedad periodontal pero sí un agravante directo, proporcionado por un incremento de agentes patógenos derivados del cambio hormonal, convirtiendo a este tipo de infecciones en un posible peligro para la salud del neonato, transformándola en una de las responsables del significativo porcentaje de muerte materno-fetal.The periodontal tissues are influenced by the presence of sex hormones, especially female hormones during the different stages of women, having a high peak during pregnancy, causing periodontal disease resulting in increased release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, E2 prostaglandin and tumor necrosis factor-alpha in amniotic fluid. There evidences that bacterial microorganisms and their toxins can move from a specific site such as the periodontics in the oral cavity to the bloodstream, managing to cross the placental barrier during pregnancy and trigger a series of processes in the fetus-placenta unit that will induce anticipated dilation and contraction of the uterus, resulting in preterm births and / or low birth weight. The objective of this work was to present neonatal complications related to periodontal disease, analyzing the association of periodontal affectations with the possible interruption of the normal development of a pregnancy. The type of research was bibliographic, based mainly on literature and studies carried out in the last five years. The results indicated that the female sex hormones by targeting the periodontal structures, lead to worsening the clinical signs of an existing periodontal disease. A pregnancy is not the causal factor of periodontal disease, but it is a direct aggravating factor, provided by an increase in pathogens derived from hormonal change, making this type of infection a possible danger to the newborn’s health, transforming it into one of the responsible for the significant percentage of maternal-fetal death.Universidad de Guayaquil.
