Se la define como la coloración amarilla de la piel y mucosa, originada por concentraciones de bilirrubina sérica anormalmente altas, causado por una bilirrubina de predominio indirecto secundario a inmadurez hepática Según el INEC Instituto Nacional De Estadísticas y Censos en el año 2013 se considera según los datos obtenidos que la hiperbilirrubinemia neonatal es la tercera causa de morbilidad infantil en nuestro país. En el presente estudio se logró determinar las características clínicas de los pacientes con hiperbilirrubinemia neonatal en el área de cuidados intensivos neonatológicos del Hospital General del Norte IESS Los Ceibos en el periodo Mayo 2017 hasta Mayo del 2018. A base de un estudio con enfoque cuantitativo, no experimental de naturaleza descriptiva, analítica y retrospectiva, de corte transversal, que abarca el área antes mencionada.En nuestro medio se presenta con mayor frecuencia la ictericia neonatal en pacientes a término, que presentan como factor determinante incompatibilidad ABO, seguido de las infecciones maternas con un 23% y en menor grado la hemolisis con un 3.92%.Es de suma importancia trabajar en unión con el servicio de ginecología, ya que al encontrarse el paciente en una etapa muy importante de su vida es importante establecer los factores de riesgo y al tener la información adecuada se puede mejorar las condiciones de vida durante el periodo perinatal para evitar su presentación o sus complicaciones y educar a las madres que deben acudir a los establecimientos de salud cuando observen un color amarillo en la piel del niño y recomendar y recomendar baños de sol durante los primeros 7 días.Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia represents a great challenge in the medical community, taking into account that it can occur in a physiological way or it can have a pathological presentation.
