La ortopedia funcional estudia las características de estas alteraciones, planea y aplica un tratamiento adecuado y dirigido a la rehabilitación del individuo; es por esto que el científico Dr. George Klammt hace 50 años, diseñó un aparato ortopédico que modifique sobremordidas verticales y horizontales. La clase II esqueletal, es una de las maloclusiones más presentes en el medio y unas de las más difíciles de corregir. En el presente artículo se tocará temas como oclusión, maloclusión, tipos de maloclusión, sobremordidas, tipos de sobremordidas, la maloclusión clase II, sus características, su etiología, su división y los tratamientos más comunes que se utiliza en este tipo de pacientes; también se expondrá un caso clínico el cual se desarrolló dentro de la Clínica Integral de Odontopediatría de la Facultad Piloto de Odontología de la Universidad de Guayaquil, donde se puso a prueba la eficacia del Klammt tipo 2 en un paciente II esqueletal, y se evidenció que en un tiempo de 4 meses, disminuyó la sobremordida horizontal, overjet, pasando de 8 mm a 5mm, es decir redujo 3mm, mejorando la estética y la funcionalidad del Sistema Estomatognático del paciente. Para la realización de este estudio, se tomaron investigaciones previas, que retroalimentaron la fundamentación teórica para poder ser aplicada en el área practica – ortopédica en el individuo, inclinado hacia la atención de la comunidad científica odontológica, para mejoramiento o consulta de dudas sobre este tipo de maloclusiones.The aesthetic, dental and psychological impact produced by an alteration of the Stomatognathic System has increased over the years. The functional orthopedics studies the characteristics of these alterations, plans and applies an adequate treatment and directed to the rehabilitation of the individual; this is why the scientist Dr. George Klammt 50 years ago, designed a brace that modified vertical and horizontal overbites. The skeletal class II is one of the malocclusions most present in the environment and one of the most difficult to correct. In the present article, topics such as occlusion, malocclusion, types of malocclusion, overbites, types of overbites, class II malocclusion, its characteristics, its etiology, its division and the most common treatments used in this type of patients will be discussed; A clinical case will also be presented which was developed within the Integral Clinic of Pediatric Dentistry of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Guayaquil, where the efficacy of Klammt type 2 in a skeletal patient II was tested, and it was evidenced that in a time of 4 months, the overjet decreased, going from 8 mm to 5 mm, that is, reducing 3 mm, improving the esthetics and functionality of the patient's Stomatognathic System.
