Objetivo: Describir el manejo de la higiene bucodental en pacientes diabéticos de edad avanzada. Metodología: Se utilizó el enfoque cualitativo, por medio del estudio exploratorio, documental; recolectando información relevante en sitio web, documentos, libros y artículos, acerca del manejo de la higiene bucodental en pacientes diabéticos de edad avanzada. Resultados: Revelaron que los pacientes con poco conocimiento sobre la higiene dental, escasa frecuencia de cepillado dental y el uso deficiente o nula de elementos complementarios de higiene, desarrollaron algún tipo de enfermedad bucal como la caries dental o periodontitis. Conclusión: Tener un buen hábito de higiene oral y utilizar los auxiliares necesarios para completar la rutina de limpieza dental, reducirá el riesgo de padecer o de desarrollar alguna enfermedad bucal que complique el control de la diabetes Elderly diabetic patient constitutes a public health problem in the world due to the high figures at present. Oral health status depends on the oral hygiene and care habits that patients have had since childhood, thus being variable in people with systemic diseases. Therefore, the correct control of diabetes mellitus and good oral habits will help prevent oral complications and thus improve patients’ life quality. The aim of this study is to describe the management of oral hygiene in elderly diabetic patients. The method corresponds to a qualitative approach through an exploratory and documentary study that collects relevant information from educational sites, documents, books, and articles with regard to oral hygiene management in elderly diabetic patients. Findings suggests that patients who lack knowledge about dental hygiene had a low frequency of tooth brushing since they do not implement all complementary hygiene items. The aforementioned leads to the development oral diseases such as tooth decay or periodontitis. Equally important, the lower frequency of dental checkups contributes to poor oral hygiene. In all, having adequate oral hygiene habits and using the necessary aids to complete the dental cleaning routine will reduce the risk of suffering or developing an oral disease that complicates the control of diabetesUniversidad de Guayaquil.
