Summary:The present article reflects the partial result of a research study on the pedagogical professional performance and its professionalization; it deals with the theoretical issues of these processes from the point of view of its relationship with the quality of the teaching and learning process; and it exposes the followed theoretical referents, as well as to socialize the operational definition of the pedagogical professional performance as one of the variable in study. Its importance lies in showing the requirements that the Ecuadorian educational system has and, accordingly, the institutions of higher education have incorporated actively for the renewal that currently is developing, without doubts it will redefine specifically the place that the university professor occupies, launching its preponderant paper in the scope and achievement of the improvement in its role as university professor and its primary objective, to engage students in the teaching-learning process, in which they should act according to the requirements of each phase.
