Résumé: | This study analyzes the representation of ugliness and the grotesque in the novel Baldomera by Alfredo Pareja Diezcanseco, exploring how these elements contribute to social criticism within Ecuadorian narrative. The research is based on the question: How are ugliness and the grotesque represented in the novel Baldomera by Alfredo Pareja Diezcanseco?. To answer this question, a documentary research methodology was employed, drawing on theoretical sources and previous studies on the aesthetics of ugliness in literature. The analysis was conducted through hermeneutics and content analysis, allowing for the interpretation of the symbolic and social meanings that Pareja Diezcanseco embeds in his work. The protagonist, Baldomera, is depicted with physical and behavioral traits that challenge traditional beauty standards, representing the harsh reality of marginalized individuals in early 20th-century Ecuador. Through the aesthetics of the grotesque, the author denounces social inequalities and the misery in which the lower classes lived, using language and detailed descriptions to create an impact on the reader. The study’s findings confirm that the aesthetics of ugliness and the grotesque in Baldomera serve a critical and testimonial function, reflecting the social reality of the time and giving a voice to those who were historically marginalized.
