Miêu tả
Tóm tắt:ABSTRACT: The study fulfilled the objective of analyzing the impact of public universities on the economic activity of the provinces of Ecuador through a cross-sectional and correlational methodology and descriptive level, showing the main characteristics of the universities and the GVA of the regions; based on a quantitative approach design, collecting information from 33 public universities and polytechnic schools through INEC and SENESCYT databases, without applying sampling. Econometric panel data techniques were used to model relationships between variables; a micro panel was used due to the limited time of observations and the number of provinces and universities. Fixed and random effects were determined by selecting the most applicable by the Hausman test; in the case of fixed effects, heteroscedasticity and autocorrelation tests were applied. The results showed that provinces with a high concentration of public universities, such as Guayas and Pichincha, had a significant impact on their economic activity; the variables considered were the number of students enrolled, teachers, postgraduate students, scholarship holders, budgets allocated to universities and degrees offered. All of these contribute to regional economic growth, proving the hypothesis put forward. Knowledge and innovation are thus related to economic development, private investment, and quality of life. The presence of universities and polytechnic schools in Ecuador influences its regional gross value added, allowing the government to adopt efficient policies in university creation based on academic offer and research, regional economic and productive relevance, and to reconsider budget allocations.
