Description
Summary:The water resource is part of the development of activities worldwide; it offers a lot of uses (consumptive and non-consumptive) although it is limited, the reduction of turbidity in water exposed to contamination is essential, therefore, it is essential to study this problem that is caused by effluent discharges and urban runoff into rivers or natural waters; hence, the objective of the present study is to reduce the turbidity of the waters of the Chibunga river using lateritic soils as filtering media. Beds of two sizes (5 and 15 mm) were made from clays from the Santa Clara-Pastaza region (yellow, brown, and red), subjected to calcination at 700 ° C. The results indicate that the three filter media allowed the reduction of the turbidity, pH, and conductivity of the water of the Chibunga river, obtaining the best results: 9.88 and 8.55 NTU with the smaller brown and red beds in monolayer filters, respectively, also, when using two-layer filters the performance was improved of the filtration system, obtaining final turbidity for the red clay of 5.32 NTU and the brown one of 6.59 NTU, values that comply with the maximum levels allowed in the national regulations, which indicates that it is feasible to use these materials as filter media in the treatment of natural waters.
