Περίληψη:Most cases of acute abdomen require urgent surgical solution, which leads to the question: Is it necessary to implement pre- and post-operative fast in these patients? Pre- and post- operative fasting is considered to prevent complications during or after surgery. The aim of this research was to conduct a literatury review to collect updated information on the management of fasting, recommendations, risks and benefits in patients with acute abdomen illneses. Methodology: it was a descriptive, documentary, nonexperimental and cross-sectional research based on the bibliographic review of the available evidence. A total of 114 documents were obtained, a selection was made based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, of which 50 were part of this work. The information was obtained from articles from journals published regional database (Scielo, Latindex, Lilacs and Redalyc) and high impact (PubMed, Medline, Scopus and Ice Web of Sciencie) as well as from UpToDate. Results: Emphasis is placed on the implementation of fasting before and after surgery, as well as the use of carbohydrate fluids orally before the procedure for the advantages it offers. These results provided the basis for recommendations on pre- and post-surgical fasting, in addition to the risks and benefits that these involve. It is concluded that minimizing periods of fasting has an important value in the reduction of risks and the recovery process of the patient with acute abdomen.
