Resumo:This research focuses on identifying barriers to innovation in processes and products within micro, small, medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), as well as large companies in the construction sector in Zone 3 of Ecuador, also considering their organizational structure. This study arises from the growing need to promote the sector's competitiveness and sustainability through innovation, recognizing the factors that hinder its implementation. A quantitative, descriptive research approach was developed by conducting surveys with representatives of construction companies during the "INNOVA CONSTRUCCIÓN" fair organized by the National University of Chimborazo. The surveys were administered via QR codes to facilitate access and response. The results revealed that the main barriers to innovation are primarily related to clients' resistance to accepting new innovative proposals, which limits the implementation of changes in processes and products. In addition, a lack of innovation among suppliers was identified, as they continue to offer the same products and services, thereby reducing the possibilities of introducing improvements. Furthermore, the absence of incentives or rewards to encourage companies to innovate was also noted. Despite these limitations, some companies expressed interest in adopting new tools and construction methodologies aligned with technological advancements, showing a willingness to change that could be strengthened with adequate support. In conclusion, although there is an intention to innovate, construction MSMEs in Zone 3 require institutional support, technical training, and strategies that reduce the identified barriers to foster a more competitive environment for innovation.
