ABSTRACT Surgical-type acute abdomen is one of the most common causes of emergency care, so this project is focused on identifying the prevalence of surgical acute abdomen, that is, the most frequent diagnoses with which our patients come, establishing what are the most common postoperative complications, age, sex and in which type of acute abdomen they occur most frequently. To determine whether there is a relationship between the presence of chronic non-communicable diseases, alcoholism and smoking with the development of postoperative complications due to acute abdomen in patients who were treated at the Instituto Ecuatoriano de Seguridad Social Hospital. Riobamba period 2019 - 2020. The non-experimental design was applied in the research, since the data were collected to interpret, relate and reach a conclusion. The data collected were made using descriptive statistics, information from 554 medical records of patients who were operated on in the institution was used, of which 157 presented post-surgical complications, the most frequent being gastrointestinal (post-surgical ileus) and wound-related complications. The chi-square calculation was used to determine whether there is a relationship between alcoholism, smoking, comorbidities and the presentation of postoperative complications; in our study, it was observed that there is a relationship between postoperative complications with alcoholism and pre-existing comorbidities.
