Summary: | Introduction. Labor induction and conduction are medical interventions that aim to facilitate labor when labor does not begin spontaneously or progress adequately. Misoprostol is used in labor induction to ripen the cervix where the initial cervix has a Bishop (< 6), while oxytocin is used in labor conduction with a Bishop (≥ 6). Complications associated with the use of these drugs include uterine hyperstimulation, uterine Tachysysystole, fever, nausea, risk of uterine rupture at high doses, and risk of emergency cesarean section in women with a history of previous cesarean section. Objectives. To conduct a comprehensive review of the scientific literature and relevant clinical studies evaluating the efficacy, effectiveness, and safety of using misoprostol and oxytocin in labor. Methodology. A systematic analysis of original scientific articles published in the following databases in the last five years: Scielo, Cochrane, Scopus, and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). The terms used were "misoprostol" and "oxytocin", among others. Results and Conclusions. Numerous articles support that both drugs are effective and safe. However, there should be a personalized clinical evaluation, adapting the dose and administration methods according to the patient's condition. |
