The purpose of this research work is to analyze the causes of traffic accidents in the Politécnica area, in the city of Riobamba, in order to be able to make a proposal using the Haddon matrix to avoid these accidents. According to data obtained from the Directorate of Traffic and Transportation Management on road accidents in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022, the main causes of traffic accidents are due to not respecting the distance between vehicles, recklessness or distraction of the driver and not respecting traffic signs. This research was carried out based on surveys, which were the support to identify the criteria that will be considered relevant at the time of studying the causes of traffic accidents. As a result of the research project, it was concluded that a large percentage of pedestrians walk on the sidewalks and spaces provided for pedestrians, however, they consider that these spaces are not safe. In addition, pedestrians believe that most traffic accidents occur due to drivers' disrespect for traffic laws. Drivers do not respect traffic laws since most of them exceed the established speed limits and even use their cell phones while driving. |

Drivers do not respect traffic laws since most of them exceed the established speed limits and even use their cell phones while driving.Según Antonio Guterres secretario general de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas “Los accidentes en las carreteras son una epidemia silenciosa y ambulante”, las lesiones causadas por los accidentes de tránsito son la octava causa de muerte a nivel mundial, de acuerdo con el registro de defunciones generales del INEC en el año 2021 en la ciudad de Riobamba los accidentes de transporte terrestre se encuentran entre una de las 10 principales causas de muertes. El presente trabajo de investigación tiene como objetivo analizar cuáles son las causas por las que ocurren los accidentes de tránsito en el sector de la Politécnica, ciudad de Riobamba, con el fin de poder plantear una propuesta mediante la matriz Haddon para poder evitar estos accidentes. Según los datos obtenidos de la Dirección de Gestión Tránsito y Transporte de los siniestros viales del año 2019, 2020, 2021 y 2022, las mayores causas por las que ocurren los accidentes de tránsito se deben a que no se respeta la distancia entre vehículos, la imprudencia o distracción del conductor y el no respetar las señales de tránsito. Esta investigación se realizó en base a encuestas, las cuales fueron el soporte para poder identificar los criterios que se considerarán relevantes al momento de estudiar las causas de los accidentes de tránsito. Como resultado del proyecto de investigación, se concluyó que un gran porcentaje de peatones transitan por las veredas y espacios dispuestos para los mismos, sin embargo, consideran que estos espacios no son seguros. Además, que los peatones consideran que la mayoría de los accidentes de tránsito ocurren debido al irrespeto de las leyes de tránsito de los conductores.
