Summary:The objective of this research was to design a plastic waste processing plant for the production of liquid fuels in the canton of Riobamba. Initially, the functional parameters of the processing plant were defined through a previous study called “Quantification and characterization of plastic waste and its use alternatives in the city of Riobamba” by Caisa et al., (2023), the amount of plastic waste to be used was characterized and quantified in order to determine the initial physical conditions with which the transformation process could be initiated. Then, the systems and equipment of the processing plant were sized and selected taking into account the thermal, structural and mass flow characteristics. For the selection of the equipment, the reliability and functionality indexes were mainly taken into account, applying indicators each one of the equipment was categorized for its qualification according to its score range. At the same time, a simulation was developed in the ASPEN PLUS software in which all the selected equipment and process variables were incorporated, giving us as results a total of fuel liquids of 462.71 gallons of gasoline, 559.61 gallons of diesel and 424.24 gallons of fuel oil. In addition, the feasibility of the processing plant was analyzed, for this analysis a working model was implemented based on the type of process and equipment already defined above. For the economic valuation we used the PUNIS software unit prices which was used to design a budget analysis of the work; for which we obtained infrastructure costs, equipment costs and operating costs of our plant, once these values were obtained we proceeded to a financial analysis using feasibility indicators such as NPV, IRR, B / C giving favorable results for the project and a TR of 1.81 years. Finally, an evaluation of alternatives for the treatment of plastic waste in Riobamba was made through a comparative analysis between the plastic waste processing plant proposed in this research work and other treatments that are being used in the management and final disposal of plastic waste in Riobamba, such as the emerging cell and mechanical recycling. The different factors of analysis determined that the best way to carry out this plastic waste management is through the plant proposed in this research project.
