Description
Summary:ABSTRACT The research project presents the Pilates method used as a physiotherapeutic treatment for idiopathic scoliosis. Scoliosis is a pathology that presents itself as an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine, caused by a rotation of one or more vertebral bodies; depending on its cause, scoliosis is classified into 3 types: congenital, neuromuscular and idiopathic. The spine is the bony structure that supports and stabilises the body and protects the bone marrow and nerve roots. It is composed of 4 sections and curvatures, cervical lordosis, dorsal kyphosis, lumbar lordosis and sacro-coccygeal kyphosis. When an abnormal curvature occurs, as in scoliosis, and depending on its severity, the proper functioning of the organs can be compromised, as well as aesthetic deformity and pain. Pilates is a technique which uses movement to achieve physical wellbeing and balance between body and mind. Due to its principles, it is used as a treatment tool, as it is easily adaptable to the characteristics of the individual and the pathology they present. The research, of bibliographic type, gathered scientific information to determine the effectiveness of Pilates, for which 120 scientific articles were collected, of which 35 were selected as the basis of the research, 15 articles stated the results of Pilates in scoliosis, 13 articles about Pilates in different pathologies of the spine, 5 articles about combinations of physiotherapeutic techniques in idiopathic scoliosis and 2 articles about idiopathic scoliosis. The selected scientific articles were found in the following databases: ElSevier, PubMed, Researchgate, PEDro, Scielo and Google Scholar. Keywords: scoliosis, idiopathic, Pilates, curvature, adolescence. Reviewed by: Lcda. Diana Chávez English Professor. c.c. 065003795-5
