Περίληψη:The main objective of this study is to model the water quality in the lower part of the Maguazo River due to its importance in the supply of drinking water for the city of Riobamba. For this purpose, specific objectives were established that include the physical-chemical characterization of the river water, the calibration of the QUAL2K model, and the simulation of scenarios to evaluate the self-purification capacity of the river under climate change conditions. The methodology adopted has a quantitative approach and a non-experimental design. Sampling was carried out at strategic points in the river to analyze physical-chemical parameters, such as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), nitrites, dissolved oxygen, and suspended solids. The QUAL2K software was used to model the water quality, allowing the simulation of self-purification processes and the evaluation of the impact of different scenarios in the long term. The results indicate that the water quality in the Maguazo River is suitable for human consumption, complying with the standards established by Ecuadorian regulations. The modeling also allowed the evaluation of future scenarios, such as an 8% increase in pollutant loads and a 20% reduction in flow, which could compromise water quality. The results raise the need to implement sustainable management strategies and continuous monitoring of water resource quality for its protection. In conclusion, this study provides valuable information on the self-purification capacity of the Maguazo River. It suggests that, although water quality is within acceptable limits, it is essential to adopt preventive measures to mitigate the risks associated with pollution and climate change. It is recommended periodic water quality analyses, meteorological stations installed, and educational campaigns on the sustainable use of water resources should be promoted.
