Summary:In Ecuador during the period 1990-2020 it has been evidenced that the major source of energy consumption comes from fossil fuels, being oil the main source of energy generation, however, renewable energy sources have shown a low participation in the economic growth of the country, that is why the present research aims to determine the relationship between renewable energy consumption and economic growth in Ecuador. For this purpose, the autoregressive model of distributed lags (ARDL) was applied, with the objective of explaining the relationship in the short and long term of the variables. For this purpose, a relationship is established between GDP per capita as the dependent variable and the independent variable renewable energy consumption; in addition, control variables such as Gross Fixed Capital Formation and trade openness are included. The results show that the exogenous variables and the endogenous variable are cointegrated; also, it was found that the error correction model (ECM) shows a negative and significant coefficient; that is to say, that the deviations in the short term of the variables are corrected in the long term by 36.78% in each period.
