description The city of Loja, also known as the cultural capital of Ecuador, is located in the south of the country and has a population of 180607 inhabitants. According to the GADM of Loja until 2021, its drinking water coverage is 85.77%, with a total of 50916 users. The drinking water supply service has been irregular in recent years due to ruptures in the networks of conduction and distribution of the vital liquid due to the landslide of land through which they pass. These problems generally occur in winter, the months of December to May, with a more significant rainfall. The designs in the drinking water systems by the GADM of Loja are based on criteria established by the Ecuadorian standard CPE-INEN 005-9-1. When developed in the 70s, this standard was outdated, especially in the coefficient of variation of consumption (kd). For this reason, this research analyzes 3'953 278 data provided by the municipal unit of drinking water and sewerage of Loja (UMAPAL); these data include from January 2015 to March 2022. In the analysis, manual data processing (Excel) was performed to eliminate anomalous data (zeros, negatives, and empty cells) and, through a descriptive statistical analysis (Minitab), eliminate outliers (boxes and whiskers) and find significant differences (ANOVA and Tukey) between the average consumption of the months analyzed. In turn, the maximum consumption (20,849 m3) and the historical average (18,017 m3) are identified, which will serve to determine the value of the consumption variation coefficient that adjusts to the current conditions of Loja. The value in the coefficient of variation found may be considered in the design of future drinking water systems or the expansion or improvements of existing ones. The results show variability in the historical monthly water consumption, as values are low and above the historical average. In addition, it has that the coefficient of variation of water consumption (1.157) found for this city does not comply with the provisions of the standard, obtaining a value under the range (1.3 – 1.5) proposed by it. Additionally, it is indicated that the presence of eventualities or fortuitous cases has little significance in water consumption if a large amount of data is available.
