Summary:The number of caesarean sections has increased in the world, The World Health Organization, in 1985, indicated that the percentage of this surgical procedure should not exceed 15% of total births. The data offered by the World Health Organization, are that since 2015 in 106 of the 169 countries presented an increase in the performance of caesarean sections with 63%. Ecuador in the year 2014 the cesarean section rate was 41.2%. (World Health Organization, 2015). The operation by caesarean section is a very frequent procedure today in both private and public institutions, according to research data compiled by the WHO worldwide, the percentage has been increasing by around 10% to 15%. Due to this increase in caesarean sections worldwide and in Ecuador, it was decided to determine the prevalence and the most frequent causes of caesarean sections at Ambato General Hospital. In the period January-august, 2019. The Objective is Characterize Causes and prevalence of emergency caesarean section: Ambato General Hospital January – august 2019. The Methodology was a documentary, explanatory, descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional and quantitative study was conducted with a universe of 285 pregnant women and a sample of 64 cases including all emergency caesarean sections performed due to obstetric indication, maternal or fetal causes and excluding patients who were I perform planned caesarean sections. We conclude that this work has shown that the leading causes for emergency caesarean sections were performed at the Ambato General Hospital, were due to the commitment of fetal well-being so the specialist health professionals chose to perform this procedure.
