| Shrnutí: | Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease with a high global prevalence, the progression of which can lead to severe microvascular complications, such as diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic nephropathy (DN). This study aims to analyze the relationship between the degree of diabetic retinopathy and the level of kidney function in people with T2DM through a systematic literature review of articles published between 2020 and 2025. Indexed academic sources were used, selecting studies that evaluate the association between ocular involvement and kidney decline, specifically through the classification of DR and the stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The results show a direct correlation between the progression of DR, especially its proliferative form, and the decrease in glomerular filtration rate. Furthermore, the presence of microalbuminuria is associated with early stages of non-proliferative DR. It is concluded that DR can serve as an early predictive marker of renal dysfunction in patients with type 2 diabetes. This finding supports the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and the use of ophthalmologic examinations as early detection tools to prevent progression to kidney failure. |
