Résumé:Palliative care is applied from the diagnosis of the disease to the final stage of life, helping the patient to prevent and alleviate the psychological, spiritual, social, economic and grief. One of its objectives is to improve the quality of life including the family environment. It should be emphasized that palliative care is not only a need for aging but also for advanced chronic diseases, taking into account that care actions are based on bioethical principles such as non-maleficence, beneficence, justice and autonomy. The patient and his family can thus obtain physical, emotional, social and spiritual well-being improving the quality of life. Palliative care in Ecuador began in 1973 through the Friends Benefactors of the Incurable Sick (ABEI) initiative and later in 1997, the Ecuadorian Foundation for Palliative Care (FECUPAL) was created, approved by Ministerial Agreement No. 1058 of the Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador on October 16, 1997. Currently in the country these care is provided in first and third level care units. There is a legal and regulatory framework related to health rights, the Constitution of the Republic, the National Plan for Good Living, the Social Agenda for Social Development and the Millennium Development Goals, Sustainable Development Goal, MAIS. The action of Nursing covers all stages of life including palliative care and mourning helping to cope with the passage of life to death.
