Prevalencia de toxoplasma gondii en alumnas de la carrera de medicina de la Universidad Nacional de Chimborazo

Toxoplasmosis is the most common zoonosis worldwide caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which can constitute high morbidity-mortality rate in the several risk groups; including, women in gestation, because this parasite can cross the placental barrier directly infect the fetus and causes abortion, malformations and serious CNS conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in young women of childbearing age and their of knowledge about the disease, this study used the IgG anti-T. gondii ELISA method to evaluate the presence of circulating antibodies in the study samples. The participants were twenty-three (N=23) female students from the medical school of the National University of Chimborazo and who were seropositive for Toxoplasma gondii. 56.5% of the participants were aware of this disease, its causal agent and the risks that this infection entails. The results found correlation between seroprevalence and direct or casual contact with cats, which may be one of the risk factors in the studied population.
