Beskrivelse
Summary:This research evaluated whether the sewage sludge from the Villa la Unión wastewater treatment plant (PTAR) in the Colta canton is suitable to be used as an additive in producing artisanal bricks that meet the standards of strength set by Ecuadorian regulations. To provide a new use for the sludge and prevent its accumulation in landfills, brick samples were made with 5% and 20% sewage sludge based on the weight of the black soil. Subsequently, marble powder was added, which serves as a flux for the fusion of materials during firing. Based on this criterion, brick samples were made with 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% of sewage sludge, adding 3% of marble powder. Finally, selections were made with 3%, 5%, and 10% of sewage sludge with an increased addition of 12% marble powder. The results revealed that using sewage sludge from the PTAR did not improve the mechanical strength of the bricks, but it did positively influence the final weight of the bricks, as lightweight and less dense bricks were obtained. The dosing with a 5% addition of sewage sludge proved to be the most efficient regarding mechanical characteristics and price. Finally, an investigative line is established to produce bricks using previously incinerated sewage sludge.
